The history of the railways within the present national borders of Turkey starts with the privilege of 130 km. İzmir-Aydın railway line on 23 September 1856.

On 24 September 1872, the Railway Administration was established to carry out railway construction and operation.

After the establishment of the Republic and the decision to nationalize the railways, the “Anatolian – Baghdat Railways Administrative Office” was established on 24 May 1924 for the railway administration under the Ministry of Nafıa.

In 1939 it was connected to the Ministry of Transport with the name of Directorate General of State Railways and Post Operations Administration.

Since 1953, it has been transformed in to the State Economic Entity under the name of “Turkish Republic State Railways Administration (TCDD)”. TÜLOMSAŞ, TÜDEMSAŞ and TÜVASAŞ are subsidiaries of .

Within the framework of the liberalization of railway transport and the restructuring of , the General Directorate of was restructured and TCDD infrastructure operator, TCDD Transportation Inc., newly established as a subsidiary of , started its activities on 14 June 2016 and was defined as railroads train operator.

is still operating as the relevant organization of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications.
